Tater Tot Casserole

1 lb. ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 can (10-3/4 oz.) condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/4 cup milk
1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
1 cup shredded Cheddar Cheese
1 lb. (1/2 of 32-oz. pkg.) frozen Tater Tots

Preheat oven to 350, if eating tonight. Brown the ground beef and saute onion together.  When meat is browned, drain grease and add frozen veggies, soup and milk. Mix well. Spray nonstick spray into a 9×13 pan.  Pour soup mixture into bottom of pan. Top with potatoes. If eating this meal tonight, then continue reading, but if prepping for a freezer meal then go below to where the freezer instructions continue.

Bake for 40 minutes and top with cheese last few minutes of baking. Baking time may vary slightly… make sure the potatoes are pretty much golden brown before topping with cheese.  Cheese only needs a couple minutes to melt.  Soup/veggie mixture should be HOT!


For freezing make meal cover casserole with aluminum foil.   Include a small baggie of cheese with each meal for topping the casserole at the end of baking.
Thaw the meal in the fridge overnight and then bake at 350 covered for the first 40 minutes. Top with cheese and bake another 10 minutes UNCOVERED.


  1. We could have a tater tot casserole every month and we wouldn’t have complaints here! I loved that it had corn and carrots in addition to the green beans. This is a meal my kids devour. The quantity was good. We had one scoop leftover. Lindsey and Braden ate it for lunch the next day, and when it was gone, asked me to “make some more.”

  9. How long does this typically take to bake when it’s been in the freezer? I’m making for a friend who has “all day” sickness and doesn’t feel like cooking, and would like to give her an idea on the amount of time to bake. Thanks for all the great recipes!

  13. Is the casserole cooked already before you freeze it? Or could I just make individual ones and freeze them raw? There’s a war waging inside my head over the tater tots being too mushy, or the beef not being cooked all the way through…

  14. If you follow the directions it should not be mushy. If you are worried you could hold off on adding the cheese until the last 5 minutes of baking.
    Don’t bake it then freeze it! It will dry it out and be yucky!

    I was a little scared about this one but after I ate it I was very surprised how good it was. It kinda tastes like shepard’s pie but modernized. My kids all love it and it freezes well. It’s a hearty meal so you feel full after eating it which is nice. Can’t go wrong with crispy tater tots in my opinion.

    The regular recipe says to cook at 375 for 45 min, but if you make it and freeze it without baking to thaw it and then only bake at 350 for 40 minutes. Why 25 fewer degrees? Is that right?

  18. I’m confused, in your response to Anjieuou say don’t bake it then freeze it because it will be gross. But in the directions it says cook meal freeze add cheese later. So do I cook the meat, add the tots, bake, then freeze. Or…?

  19. Crystal, thanks for your comment! I appreciate people who ask for clarification especially since I realized that the way I explained it wasn’t very clear. I will go make a change on the instructions. Regarding what you asked: You Prep it (meaning cook up the meat mixture and top with the frozen tater tots) BUT hold off on cooking. Just cover with foil and include a baggie of cheese to be added at a future date when you bake it.
